Richard Growden started up the safari trips on his return to civvy street after 22 years in the army, and allowed him to pursue his interest in the beautiful countryside and animals that surround Porlock. The trips are designed to be exhilarating, educational and simply fun, and for all ages. The cost for the two and a half hour trips are £25 per person
Travel is by a fully-equipped Land Rover with six forward-facing seats, air-conditioning and a step to aid entry and exit. There are binoculars available, and a number of routes that can be followed: if your party are the sole travellers on the trip, or if a previous request has not been made, you can ask for a particular route to be followed. Richard does reserve the right to alter the route according to prevailing weather conditions and/or safety issues, and will advise you of these. There is a choice of five different routes on the Safaris website for you to look at. You can book the trip for your sole enjoyment, should you wish. Please contact us for pricing in this event.
You should ensure that you dress appropriately for the moors - wear sensible walking shoes or boots, and bring along wet weather gear just in case; the climate can and does change in minutes out on the moors, and we will exit the Land Rover to stretch our legs, to observe the views and wildlife and to enable to you take photographs.
Pick-up is from the Porlock village hall car park, and the safaris leave at 10:00 and 14:30 each day, and are available all year round. Please be advised that, for your own safety and comfort, the safaris are not advisable if you are more than 4 months pregnant, have physical conditions that make off-road travel difficult, such as hip or back issues, or are under 12 years of age. As we will be observing many of the animals that inhabit the area, dogs are not permitted (even well-behaved ones) - we apologise for this, as the area is generally very dog-friendly, but both the reaction of the wildlife and also pets can be unpredictable when they are brought into contact with one another.
Please bear in mind that this is not intended to be an "off-road experience", but an informative safari. We will go off-road from time to time, with the landowners' permission, but much of the route will be on the lanes and tracks that criss-cross the moors.
